Iran conflict – a smooth passage towards lasting peace?
It has been over 3 months since the start of the Iran conflict. Are we at the end-game? On Wednesday 17 June, the US and Iran signed a deal committing to ‘reopening’ the Strait of Hormuz, an immediate waiver of Iranian oil sanctions, and the creation of a US$300 billion reconstruction fund for Iran. By Saturday, Iran had again declared the Strait of Hormuz ‘closed’. Further talks to finalise terms will take place over the next 60 days – or more if needed.

Sanctions, Trade and Transport: Managing Legal Risk from a German and European Perspective
Economic sanctions have become one of the most powerful regulatory instruments shaping international trade and transport. For companies involved in maritime shipping, logistics and cross‑border supply chains, sanctions are no longer a peripheral compliance issue but a central operational and legal risk factor.
The Oceanus v Lloyd’s (M/V “Vyssos”) case is the first to interpret the IMI Clauses (Hulls), clarifying how mortgagees’ interest insurance operates when underlying cover fails and the meaning of privity. It is particularly relevant for vessels operating in war risk areas.
The Court of Appeal has revisited the interpretation and application of the “EPS Sanctions Clause”. This decision highlights the complex balance owners must maintain between complying with charterers’ orders and managing sanctions risks.
