Meet the team –  Ewen Cairns

Ewen Cairns is a dual-qualified solicitor in Scotland and England & Wales, and recently joined DWF’s Real Estate team as a Director. He specialises in energy and infrastructure projects that align closely with public sector priorities - particularly around net zero, regional development, and sustainable investment.

Ewen has advised on a wide range of technologies and initiatives that are increasingly central to public sector strategy, including:

  • Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Infrastructure – supporting rollout projects with private sector operators working in partnership with local authorities to expand public charging networks.
  • Renewable Energy – including wind, solar, and battery storage developments that contribute to local energy resilience and decarbonisation.
  • Smart Grids and Energy Flexibility – advising on demand-side response and grid balancing technologies that support national infrastructure.
  • Hydrogen and Low-Carbon Fuels – contributing to early-stage projects relevant to future transport and industrial decarbonisation.
  • Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) – engaging with emerging policy and investment models that support long-term emissions reduction.
  • Green Finance and ESG-linked Real Estate – integrating sustainability into investment strategies, with relevance to public sector procurement and funding frameworks.

Ewen also brings valuable insight from working within a public sector funding body, where he supported governance, policy development, and stakeholder engagement. His in-house legal experience with major energy developers has involved delivering large-scale infrastructure projects - often in collaboration with public sector partners.

With a strong understanding of both the legal and strategic dimensions of infrastructure delivery, Ewen is well-placed to support Government and Public Sector clients in delivering impactful, future-focused projects.
